A few days before Halloween, we are all excited. The scariest night of the year always has a certain charm, but among creepy witches, giant monsters, and scary ghosts, we always prefer to carve out some moments of fun, maybe with some candy... or some gems!
Today Marco Bicego's gems will help us discover some of the most beautiful Halloween traditions. Trick or Treat?

Trick or Treat with Marco Bicego

How did Halloween originate?

By moonlight, Halloween was born in ancient times when the Celtic peoples, connected to the traditions of the fields, celebrated the seasonal transition. According to legends, in fact, on the last day of October the end of the year of light was celebrated, to enter the dark year, corresponding to the cold season.
During the celebration, it was customary to wear frightening clothes, as it was believed that at night the spirits of the dead would free themselves from their graves to try to possess the body of a living person. Thanks to scary clothes, the Celts aimed to hide to scare the spirits they wanted to escape from.
The Lunaria jewels by Marco Bicego take us back a bit to those full moon nights so loved by witches for their rituals. Wearing a scary outfit with such a precious accessory definitely has a different charm!

Trick or Treat?

When the Celtic festival was passed down into Roman tradition and then Christianized as All Saints' Day, we are almost in the medieval period. The current tradition of "Trick or Treat?" seems to date back to these years: peasants and beggars used to knock on every door in the village to receive help to get through the winter. In return, they offered prayers for the souls of the dead. Those who gave no help would instead be wished bad luck.
Other legends instead speak of mischievous fairies who were offered food to calm their pranks.
Today, children all over the world (but especially those in Anglo-Saxon countries!) knock on doors asking for candies and sweets of all kinds. Otherwise... a trick!
The Africa collection by Marco Bicego, with its beautiful gems, reminds me a bit of the baskets full of colorful candies given out to children.

Witches and other legends

Witches, along with monsters and spirits, are one of the main symbols of Halloween. According to legend, October 31 was the perfect day to perform collective spells, perhaps gathering at night in a forest.
Witches have always had a great charm, but they have also terrified many over the years. So much so that, in the world, there are cities that still today remember the tragic passage of many witches of the past. First among all, Salem, in Massachusetts. Even in Italy, we have a town that, in the 16th century, was inhabited by witches and sorceresses. It is Triora, in the province of Imperia, Liguria.
Among spells, potions, and magic circles, I like to think that modern witches also love to wear the right jewel, one that captures all the splendor of this autumn night.

The Halloween pumpkin

The Jack O' Lantern is undoubtedly one of the most characteristic Halloween traditions, loved by both young and old.
According to legend, Jack, after tricking the devil, found himself wandering between Heaven and Hell, rejected by all. He carried a turnip (later turned into a pumpkin in the legends!), in which he kept a small candle to light his way in the darkness during his eternal wandering. Hence, the legend of the carved and illuminated pumpkin on Halloween night.
Like a small light in the darkness of the witches' night, even in this case Jaipur comes to our aid, to illuminate the darkness with its gems.
