The Etiquette of Jewelry

In the past, we have already discussed the importance of wearing the right jewel at the right moment, but how many of us knew that there is a true Jewellery Etiquette? Today we discover together 5 important etiquette tips (and a couple of curiosities!)

Excessiveness abolished

A concept already addressed, but worth repeating: when wearing jewellery, simplicity always wins! It is better to avoid, therefore, pairing overly showy jewels together. Also pay attention to the outfit: a dress rich in details requires few minimal-style trinkets. Also be careful with rings: less is more! Wear few, but good ones!

Men’s jewellery

Etiquette says that a man should wear only one ring (the wedding band!) and a watch. Of course, we know very well that bracelets and necklaces with a masculine cut add a special touch to a man who likes to stand out. So other jewels are welcome, but not too flashy! Did you know that etiquette forbids rings (except, of course, the wedding band) for men? Don’t worry: on less formal occasions, we can overlook this...

Never give brooches as gifts

Although they are an accessory capable of making any outfit charming, etiquette does not allow brooches to be given as gifts! This is because their pin could prick the recipient of the gift and, according to superstition, this would mean a wish of pain.

Day and evening jewellery

Just as no one would wear a sequin dress in the middle of the morning, there are well-defined style rules for jewellery too!

By day, gold and pearls are allowed, as well as light-coloured gems such as aquamarine and jade, even in rings.
By evening, it is better to wear more discreet and precious jewels, with gems of dark and intense shades, for example emeralds and sapphires.
Diamonds are perfect at both times of the day!

Engagement ring and wedding band

Matching these two rings with such personal value is not impossible: etiquette advises us to wear them both on the left ring finger. First the engagement ring, then the wedding band. However, nothing forbids us from wearing the engagement ring on the right ring finger, especially if it is made of a different material than the wedding band.

Curiosities

Today etiquette proves to be much more flexible and accessible to everyone, but did you know that in the past it was not allowed to wear diamonds before reaching 40 years of age? Pearls, moreover, were only allowed with elegant clothes, while today we can afford to wear them with almost any outfit.

These were the most important rules of jewellery etiquette. Did you already know them?

We will see you here again very soon, with many new interesting guides!
