Fancy cuts in the diamond

We have talked about diamonds, about the 4 c, about how to cut a diamond... and today we will look together at the fancy cuts in diamonds.
Among curious names and more classic shapes, surely each of us will find the one that represents us the most. Who knows if we will manage to guess together which is Fabrizio Ferro’s favourite fancy cut... let’s try! Maybe we’ll get it right.

Fancy cuts in diamonds

Marquise or navette

The marquise cut features a diamond elongated at both ends. Shaped like a mouth, it is named after the Marquise of Pompadour, for whom the Sun King had a diamond cut in a shape similar to her lips. Although it loses a bit of light near the points, the Marquise cut is truly original, alluring, and perfect for a diamond set in a romantic gift.

Drop or Pendeloque

With its beautiful shape similar to a drop of water, the Pendeloque cut is truly one of the most appreciated ever. The rounder part of the diamond with this cut allows light to filter inside, making it brilliant and truly beautiful to the eye. A very classic cut, always appreciated, especially for a pendant of great value.

Baguette

Rectangular and shaped like the classic French baguette (yes, the shape of bread!), the diamond with this cut is usually used as a side stone. Although it has less value, it is truly beautiful to admire alongside other diamonds or as a crown for other precious stones.

Trapezoid

There is certainly no need to describe in detail this classic geometric shape. It is certain that trapezoid diamonds are usually used as side stones, although sometimes they can become the main feature of the jewel, for a more refined and modern style.

Emerald

Similar to the classic rectangular emerald cut, this cut resembles the Baguette we mentioned earlier, but shorter. The rounded corners and the greater number of facets make emerald cut diamonds very bright and shining. Truly beautiful and ideal to be set in a beautiful engagement ring.

Oval

One of the cuts par excellence, which allows for a beautiful brilliance. Unfortunately, this type of cut, widely used in coloured stones, is little requested in diamonds. Certainly, however, it is worth considering if you are looking for a truly special jewel...

Heart

The most romantic cut of all... and also the most difficult to achieve! Obtained thanks to the skill of diamond craftsmen, the heart cut is definitely sought after, to be used as a pendant. It resembles the drop cut in the narrower part of the diamond. We really like it a lot!

Princess Cut

Another type of cut very much appreciated is the Princess Cut: it is the most recent among the cuts, dating back to the early 1980s. Square and precious, it is a decidedly elegant cut, classic but not too much, perfect for solitaires.

Fancy cut? What do the experts say?

Round

Classic, never out of fashion, allows for maximum brilliance... the round cut or "brilliant cut" is definitely ideal to get the most value, beauty, and light from your diamond. Surely it is the cut most appreciated by jewellery and gemmology experts. What do you think, could this be Fabrizio’s favourite cut too? Read to the end to find out...

Curious to discover Fabrizio Ferro’s favourite cut? Well, if you thought like me that it was the round brilliant, you were completely wrong. Fabrizio confided to me that his favourite fancy cut is the Marquise: refined and elegant just like him!
