How to clean yellow and white gold

How can you clean gold?

Have you ever had grandparents give you precious items they wore when they were young or found them in old drawers? Vintage has come back into fashion and learning how to clean gold properly, whether it is more or less recent, is a great skill.

Once you have "inherited" the gold, you may have wondered how to clean it, perhaps fearing to damage it.

Why do we decide to clean gold?

  • To restore shine to precious items dear to us so we can wear them again as they were originally;
  • The desire to resell one’s gold in optimal condition;
  • Add value to a neglected jewel;
  • Simply for a matter of cleanliness, since it comes into contact with our body.

Methods to clean yellow gold

One of the simplest and most home-based methods for yellow gold is to use common dish soap and warm water - not boiling -: soak the gold for about ten minutes and rinse - sparkling water is also fine. Some soaps may be harsh, so it is preferable to choose a mild soap for cleaning.

Methods to clean white gold

It is more delicate than yellow gold but, in any case, you can use the method for yellow gold, extending the soaking time a little longer in warm water and soap.

Be careful with jewels that have special settings or that hold stones or inlays. It is preferable to dampen a cloth and clean the jewel indirectly in this way.

And to polish it?

To polish gold you can use:

  • Products specific for precious metals, cleaning them with a soft cloth;
  • A toothbrush and mild soap, taking care not to scratch the surface.
