The 4Cs of the diamond: the Colour
Our journey continues in discovering the 4C: the main features that distinguish the perfect diamond! Today, in fact, we talk about Colour!
But does the diamond have a colour?
The answer is... sort of! The most precious diamond, in fact, must be completely colourless. However, this does not mean that there are other varieties and classifications that give the diamond a more precise ''colour''.
The colourless diamond
The pure diamond, the colourless one, is classified as D, a class that certifies the best possible quality for this precious stone.
The other classes
From colourless to a slight trace of colour: it moves to class E, whose colouring can only be detected with special instruments. The scale then continues: F, almost transparent; G or H when there are small visible traces of colour; from I to K for slightly coloured diamonds and onwards up to Z for diamonds that have a bright yellow colouring.
Other colours
There are also diamonds with unusual colours, called ''fancy'' and very rare, such as pink, blue, yellow, and brownish ones. The colouring, in these cases, is due to chemical impurities or structural defects of the crystal lattice. The most common impurity is caused by nitrogen, which makes diamonds, indeed, yellowish and brownish in colour!
Ā
Colour and colourless are two adjectives that characterise different types of diamonds, equally precious. Which do you prefer? The purest and colourless diamonds, or the more particular and chemically imperfect ones?
