How is a ring made?
The creation of a jewel is a fascinating journey full of surprises. Ferro Gioielli has always brought creativity, passion, and skill to the table, from the idea to the physical creation of a precious item. Fabrizio and Gianluca Ferro, as expert gemmologists, explained to me the long process of creating the most precious jewels. Today I share it with you, to discover together how a ring is born.
How is a ring born?
The first phase
When the request comes from a customer, it is essential to understand their needs and dreams. A jewel can be born from the desire to recover a precious item from the past, to which one was attached, or from the need to create something new. Often the customer aims to recreate a family ring, but just as often they come to Ferro Gioielli to purchase a certified diamond or a precious stone that is the fruit of a special journey, which has remained in the heart, or

The artistic part
In short: everything starts from the customer's wishes and, only after talking with them (or, more often, with her), hypotheses are made through the creation of drawings, renderings, or samples to show what the ring will look like. The creative and artistic process gathers all the customer's needs but also seeks to turn dreams, feelings, and emotions into reality.
The creation
From the drawing, one then moves to the actual design, and then begins the handcrafting. First, Fabrizio explained to me, the shank is designed and made, then the setting, which is the part of the ring that will hold the precious stone (or stones!). Only afterward will the band be made, worked on until the rough finish.
At this point, the craftsman will join the two parts together. But how? By alloying the gold, which must be brought from pure 1000 thousandths to 750 thousandths (the classic 18kt) by adding alloys, that is, metals chosen based on the hardness and color desired for the jewel.
The finishing
Now comes the most delicate point, where the finishing of the work is done, removing burrs, file marks, and excess solder. All this is done using files and sandpaper with increasingly fine grit until the desired, even finish is achieved, which to the touch feels almost like silk.
At this point, the jewel goes into the cleaning machine, where, thanks to abrasive brushes and special pastes, the result is a smooth surface finish.

A work of hands and heart
It is time to manually set the gems into the newly created jewel. A task that requires absolute precision and care, fully respecting the shape and hardness of the stone. Depending on the stone to be set and the ring model, specific techniques will be used.
Now the ring is ready... but not finished!
To be worn, it requires a final step of polishing. The ring is polished with brushes and “rouge,” a color that can vary depending on the composition of the alloy chosen to make the jewel. If there are parts of white gold, the rhodium plating process takes place... but we will talk about that in more detail!
After this step, the ring is finally ready, shiny, brilliant, and precious in every component. The process of creating a ring on the customer's request is an adventure in search of the right style and finish to satisfy every wish of the one who will then wear it.
How a ring is born: a journey of emotions
The skilled hands of Fabrizio and Gianluca live every part of the process as a journey, experiencing firsthand the feelings and dreams the customer has shared. Whether the desire for a ring comes from a memory or the wish to live a new experience, the jeweler's task is to transform an emotion into reality, with skill and delicacy.
Delivering a newly created ring to the customer who requested it is an emotion because a little piece of oneself is always left in the precious items carefully made. But the satisfaction is great when seeing the finished product. And often, it leaves one speechless.
