Coronavirus: how to sanitize jewelry and watches at home

In this particular time of hardship, we are all much more mindful of personal cleanliness and the hygiene of the objects around us. It is good to know that, just like our hands, our smartphones, and the items we touch, jewellery and watches can also be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected! In today’s guide, we explain how to best sanitise jewellery and watches.

Jewellery

We had already discussed in this post how to clean jewellery at home. In this case, however, we seek a deeper sanitisation, primarily aimed at eliminating germs and bacteria. It’s quick and easy! You will only need some water with mild soap, a cloth to dampen, and an alcoholic solution. Food-grade alcohol can indeed remove up to 70% of germs and bacteria!

There are two methods: immersion or "dry" cleaning. You can choose to either immerse your jewellery in soapy water or, if you prefer, clean them with a cloth dampened with the disinfectant solution.

Feel free to also use a soft-bristled brush to reach all parts of the jewellery. Gently, please! Finally, favour lukewarm water.

Pearls and coloured gems

This case requires special care, so as not to damage the gems and the pearls! Absolutely avoid bleach and ammonia and favour water, mild soap, and for deeper hygiene, the alcoholic solution. Absolutely no rubbing: pearls are delicate, and to clean them properly, it is enough to immerse them in a mild solution. Also be careful not to wash them together with other jewellery: they could get damaged or scratched.

Watches

When dealing with a mechanism with more complex (or technological!) gears, it is wise to be more cautious. If your watches are waterproof, the method to sanitise them is the same: immersion in lukewarm soapy water and then a cloth dampened with the disinfectant solution.

For non-waterproof watches, the advice is to use only the cloth dampened with the disinfectant solution. The important thing in this case is to clean the watches very carefully.

In conclusion, we wish to remind you of the importance of following all the rules set by the Government in this difficult time. Protecting ourselves and our loved ones is the priority, even through simple acts like disinfecting our accessories, which are often breeding grounds for germs.
