Wedding band: history and advice
One of the quintessential rings is undoubtedly the wedding band, a symbol of love and fidelity. Today we discover together its history, some curiosities, and which models to aim for in 2019!
The history
The ring finger has always been considered magical in many cultures: it is believed that a vein runs from the ring finger straight to the heart. This, called the "amoris vena", makes the ring finger the symbol of eternal love.
The first to use rings as a symbol of marriage were the Romans, with the anulus pronubis, initially made of iron and gold and given by the groom during the engagement.
In the Middle Ages, the custom of blessing the wedding band during the religious ceremony was introduced for Christian marriages. Tradition held that it was first placed on the index finger, then the middle finger, to finally fit perfectly on the ring finger, the finger of love.
Curiosities from around the world
Did you know that in England the choice of the finger to wear the wedding band is free? The Book of Prayers only mentions "ring to be worn on the left hand," without specifying which finger.
Many European countries usually move the ring to the right hand after the wedding ceremony.
In Jewish ceremonies, the band should be worn on the index finger, the middle finger, or the thumb.
The Muslim marriage does not include rings: however, many newlyweds wear the band as a symbol of eternal love. In this case, men would wear rings on the right hand and women on the left.
