Le 4C del diamante: la Purezza

The 4Cs of the diamond: Clarity

Today we talk about Purity, from the English Clarity, this sweet-sounding name that is actually very important for the classification of the perfect diamond. Let’s discover together what it means!

What is purity?

Purity is the measure of the internal flaws of the diamond, which in the experts’ jargon are called “inclusions.”

What does “inclusions” mean?

It refers to the presence of a crystal of a foreign material, small cracks, or whitish halos inside the diamond. The purity scale varies according to the number, color, position, size, and visibility of these imperfections.

Purity scale

There is a specific scale to classify purity, developed by the GIA, the Gemological Institute of America, which starts from the inclusions visible on a diamond observed at ten times magnification. Obviously, it goes without saying, only expert professionals can notice such imperfections.

Diamonds and purity

At Ferro Jewels we deal with quality jewellery: as such, the diamonds used or put on the market must have a high purity rating. But only 20% of the diamonds mined have a purity score sufficient for jewellery use! Most diamonds, in fact, are only for industrial use, decidedly of lower quality compared to fine jewellery. That said, even the 20% of diamonds dedicated to jewellery actually have many small inclusions.

Problems?

Most inclusions do not compromise the structure and value of the gem: only sometimes, particularly large white halos can inhibit the diamond’s ability to transmit light. Another problem is caused by cracks: if they are too close to the surface of the gem, there is a risk that it may fracture.

Purity is certainly one of the most important factors to consider when it comes to high-quality, precious, and radiant diamonds!
I hope this journey into the characteristics of diamonds has fascinated you as much as it has fascinated me!
