Summer: how to wear watches and jewelry at the seaside!

Don’t want to go without your watch at the seaside? Here are some useful tips to avoid damaging it

TIPS FOR HIM

Summer has arrived, bringing heat and the desire for beach and sea. We take care of our body, but who looks after our faithful watch? Yes, because most of the repairs carried out by our watch department happen during or after the summer period when the damage is already done. I’m talking about water infiltration, both fresh and saltwater. Once inside the watch, it causes an almost immediate stoppage of the mechanism with sometimes very invasive damage also to the dial, requiring costly repairs. The advice is, at the start of the season or holidays, to take your watch to a trusted service centre where they will perform a water resistance test and, if necessary, replace the seals of the case back or the pushers/crown. With a minimal expense, our companion will be happy to follow us on any adventure. Below are some indications about the water resistance scale and how to use it. You can read it by turning the watch as it is printed on the case back: 3 atm (water resistant to 30 metres) allows us to wash our hands safely; 5 atm (water resistant to 50 metres) allows us to swim; 10 atm (water resistant to 100 metres) allows us to dive and submerge. All this naturally after having performed the water resistance test with a positive result. In any case, when taking a shower the watch should always be removed, even if it is a professional diver’s watch, because of the temperature change caused by the water and the seals might not hold properly.

Jewellery can get wet and sunbathed... but beware!

TIPS FOR HER

Summer brings with it the desire for holidays and carefreeness, often becoming a time to show off one’s jewellery. Here are some tips to keep your trinkets always neat and sparkling. For those who wear pearls, the rule is not to wear them while applying makeup, beware of beauty creams, hair sprays and various foams because of the chemicals inside that over time dull and damage the pearls. It is very useful to rub them at the end of the evening to remove any cosmetics present on the skin, and store them in a soft cloth away from other gems. As for gold and stone jewellery, in recent years white gold has been the favourite, so they will need polishing and rhodium plating to restore the original brightness of the white. Diamonds will also need cleaning and checking. Have them examined by a professional who will assess whether the jewellery is still in perfect condition or if it needs maintenance, which will certainly be less costly than losing a gem through neglect. If you decide to do it yourself, just boil water with some mild soap in a small pot and, with a very soft brush, gently rub through the crevices of the jewellery and over the stones, then rinse the piece in water after immersing it in denatured alcohol. Dry it with a soft cloth or with a hairdryer on low heat. Naturally, this treatment should not be done on jewellery with pearls, corals, turquoise, opals, and mother-of-pearl. If you put them in a jewellery box, make sure each has its own place and they do not come into contact with each other to avoid possible scratches.
