“Fancy Colour” Diamonds: what are they?
First of all, it is important to know that Diamonds possess the full spectrum of colours. Indeed, you can find them in every shade: brown, yellow, red, purple, blue, green, black...
Although there are many possibilities, not all are classified as “fancy colour”, those fancy colours that must have a very strong tone.
Diamonds with very saturated colours are extremely rare and are considered a true wonder of nature. Just think that “fancy” diamonds represent only 0.01% of all diamonds found in nature.
How is the coloured diamond born?
I would like to speak of magic, of how these precious stones so unique are the result of some spell. Of how they are born from a fairy’s smile or a wizard’s laughter.
Perhaps, the matter is simpler and less fanciful, but after all chemistry and magic are two kindred paths.
Fancy diamonds owe their colour to atoms scattered within the chemical structure of the carbon that forms the diamond. An example? From nitrogen atoms come the fancy yellows.
Without other substances inside, the diamond is always clear.
