Moonstone: the gem of June
Attention to the raw materials used in jewellery has always been a must for Ferro Gioielli. Gold, silver, diamonds and precious stones: gemmology, in particular, is a vast world and, from time to time, I like to talk about some lesser-known precious stones. Among these is the Moonstone, especially dedicated to the month of June.
Moonstone: the gem of June
The month of June features three different gems: Alexandrite, Pearl and Moonstone. I have chosen to tell you the story and legends concerning the lesser-known but definitely very fascinating one: the Moonstone, also called Selenite or Adularia. A gem with a changing rainbow colour, it is a truly captivating precious stone, perfect for jewellery to wear on warm summer evenings.

The gem
The main characteristic of the Moonstone is called "adularescence" or "schiller" and it is its particular appearance, determined by this special optical effect that makes it a truly unique stone. The gem, ice-coloured, shines with a silvery gleam that allows the whole rainbow to be glimpsed when touched by light. It is indeed the light that, passing through the body of the precious stone, reflects on the internal crystal layers and creates all the beautiful iridescences seen on the surface.

The benefits
Linked to our satellite, this gem is close to the natural element of water and to the woman in her life phases. Like the Moon, it is said that this wonderful gem can control cycles: for this reason it is often associated with the woman’s monthly cycle and is said to have relaxing powers during this time. A friend of depth, it is said that Adularia is perfect to help with meditation, but also that it encourages creativity and the desire to be in company. Finally, its great power as an amulet makes it the ideal gem to create balance and drive away negativity.
The legends
The Moon Stone has always been associated with the Goddess Diana, of wondrous beauty, protector of the hunt, nature and animals. It is said that this gem can attract lunar energies and that, in ancient times, it was used during propitiatory rituals for this very purpose. In ancient India, as in the Roman Empire, it was believed that this gem was born when moonbeams struck the rock. The name of the stone, in Hindi, is chandrakant, which means "beloved by the moon". A beautiful meaning that links this gem especially to the female universe, full of love and feelings.
In Asia, instead, the Moonstone was connected to the world of sailors and it was believed that this gem had the power to bring luck in navigation. The charm of the earthly satellite, expressed by the special colour of this gem, is reflected in all the legends concerning it.
In short: this beautiful gem is truly full of wonderful meanings, which make it ideal to always carry with you, set in a ring, a bracelet or a necklace.
